Access Statement for Penrhiw Priory, St Davids, Pembrokeshire SA62 6PG
Introduction
Penrhiw Priory is located in Britain’s smallest city, St Davids, Pembrokeshire. It offers eight ensuite bedrooms; one king double bedroom with ensuite shower, three super king double bedrooms with ensuite shower, three king bedrooms with ensuite shower and bath and one ground floor bedroom suite, compromising of a super king twin or double bed, lounge with double sofa bed and an ensuite shower and bath.
Penrhiw Priory is an elegant stone-built former priory dating from the 18th century. It has been recently refurbished and whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests there are some period features of the house which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. We are located within a 5 minute walk of St Davids City and the historic St Davids Cathedral and a twenty minute walk to Whitesands Beach and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park coast path.
Pre Arrival

- The nearest airport to Penrhiw Priory is Cardiff Airport, 114 miles away.
- The nearest railway station is the town of Haverfordwest, 16 miles from St Davids. Trains from Haverfordwest connect with services at Swansea.
- Taxis are usually available at Haverfordwest train station but we can book one for you in advance if required.
- The nearest bus stop for St Davids to Haverfordwest or St Davids to Fishguard services is located on New Street in St Davids, approximately 800m from Penrhiw Priory. Both services operate between Monday and Saturday from approximately 07.30 am to 7.00 pm, visit https://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/bus-routes-and-timetables for the latest timetables. There are also coastal bus services which operate from April to September each year, visit pembrokeshire.gov.uk and search for bus timetables for the latest information.
- The nearest shops are approximately 700m away via a country road with a slight hill.
- As Penrhiw Priory is a hypoallergenic venue, we do not accept dogs, and for the comfort of our guests, we do not allow dogs to be left in the car park overnight, we do of course welcome assistance dogs.
Car Parking and Arrival
- Penrhiw Priory has a gated entrance which leads onto a tarmacked driveway. If the gates are closed, they can be opened by pressing the ‘open’ button on the post located just outside the entrance, on the right hand side. If you require assistance to gain entry, please press the ‘call’ button.
- The car park is located directly outside the Priory and is set in the private grounds of the property.
- Access to our property is gained from the tarmacked car park through the main entrance, which leads into the porch and then into the tiled hallway and reception/welcome area.
- This outside area is well lit at night.
- There are two steps into the external porch, the first is 4cm high and 171cm wide, the second is 12cm high and 115cm wide.
- There is one step 12cm high and 115cm wide and a traditional heavy wooden door which is 114cm wide and opens into a carpeted porch area. If you need assistance with the door, please ring the doorbell.
- There is a second door 88cm wide which opens into the wooden hallway, with a central carpet running the length of the corridor. To the right of the stairs is a desk with a bell, which you can use to alert one of our team members to your arrival, should they not already be present.
- The area is well lit with overhead lighting.
- Assistance can be given with luggage.
Bedrooms
- Six of our guest rooms are located within the main house and are accessed by means of stairs.
- Four rooms are located on the first floor. There are 10 steps, 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first stair landing, then one step 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the second stair landing then 10 steps 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first floor. There is a hand rail on one side.
- Two bedrooms are located on the second floor. There are 10 steps, 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first stair landing, then one step 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the second stair landing then 10 steps 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first floor. There is a hand rail on one side.
- Two of our guest bedrooms (Meadow and Court) are located within the Coach House, which is a separate building set in the grounds of the property. The entrance to the Coach House is 20 metres from the entrance of the main house and to reach it you will be required to cross 5 metres of tarmacked car park and 20 metres of paved walkway. There is one step into the Coach House ground floor suite which is 20cm high and 87cm wide. To reach the upper bedroom there are 10 steps, 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first stair landing, then one step 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the second stair landing then 4 steps 16cm high and 96.5cm wide to the first floor. There is a hand rail on one side.
- Bedroom Ravens and Moorland and Court have a king bed, 58 cm high, with access from both sides and an ensuite bathroom with separate fixed head shower cubicle with a 64cm entry gap and a step of 20cm. The toilet is 43cm in height.
- Bedrooms Garden and Treetops have super king bed, 58 cm high, with access from both sides and an en-suite bathroom with separate fixed head shower cubicle with a 64cm entry gap and a step of 20cm. The toilet is 43cm in height.
- Bedroom Valley has a king bed, 58 cm high, with access from both sides, with an ensuite bathroom with separate fixed head shower cubicle with a 64cm entry gap and a step of 20cm and separate free standing bath 60cm high. The toilet is 43cm in height.
- Bedroom Mountain and Meadow Suite each have a super king bed, 58 cm high, with access from both sides, with an en-suite bathroom with separate fixed head shower cubicle with a 64cm entry gap and a step of 20cm and separate free standing bath 60cm high. The toilet is 43cm in height. The Coach House Suite also has a double sofa bed with access from both sides.
- Your bed combines the highest quality Sealy mattress, pillows and duvet and 300 thread linens
- There is seating, bedside tables, bedside lamps, a wardrobe and desk provided in each room.
- Flat screen Sky TV/DVD with subtitles available.
Public Areas
- All public areas, hall, stairs, and landings are well lit using a combination of floor, ceiling and table lamps.
- The hallway is wooden flooring.
- The dining, drawing room, study and lounge are situated off the hallway on the ground floor and the entrance to each is 87cm wide. There is a raised threshold at each entrance of 1-2cm high.
- There is one toilet on the ground floor which leads off from the hallway and is accessed via one door of 84cm wide door and a second door of 89cm wide. Both doorways have a raised threshold of 1-2cm high. The toilet is 40cm in height.
- The stairs are wooden with a leather runner fixed in place.
- The house is fully centrally heated throughout, temperatures can be adjusted via radiator in each room to suit individual requirements.
- There are automatic audible smoke alarms in the main and upper halls, bedrooms, reception areas and kitchen.
- Each room has a wooden floor and large windows allowing plenty of natural light, supplemented by adjustable overhead lights and floor lamps.
- In the dining and drawing rooms there is seating for 16 people at solid wood tables with fabric covered chairs. There is a coordinating wood cabinet with marble top where guests can help themselves to cereal, fruits, yoghurts, juices and toast. Assistance can be provided on request.
- There is a fridge, stocking the items of the honesty bar.
- In the lounge and drawing room there is a carpet covering 50% of the floor.
Garden
- For all guests there is a small paved area to the rear of the main house, which leads onto a landscaped garden via 5 steps 18cm high and 145cm wide. There are picnic benches, sun loungers and tables and chairs for guests use.
- For guests staying in the ground floor Coach House Suite, there is a paved patio area at the rear of the building which leads onto a landscaped garden.
Additional Information
- There are ‘In Case of Fire’ instructions located in the guest manual, which is kept in the desk drawer in each bedroom. This is explained to each guest on arrival.
- There is an information folder for each of the bedrooms with maps giving information on NHS facilities, local restaurants/pubs, travel, theatres and local golf facilities.
- We have a mud room located on the ground floor at the rear of the property for guests returning from the beach or coast path who would like to wash their boots. There is one step of 14cm high and 105cm wide into the room.
- Wi-Fi facilities are also available throughout the property
- We are happy to cater for special diets or particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us of your dietary requirements.
- We can refrigerate prescription medication and additionally store any perishable food in our fridge for a limited period.
- Mobile phone reception at Penrhiw Priory generally good.

Personal information means information about you that is personally identifiable like your name, address, e-mail address or phone number, and that is not otherwise publicly available and is not part of your work identification.
Your Personal information may be gathered in the following ways:
1. Making a reservation.
2. Providing the information to us by participating in a marketing initiative.
3. In order to continue to purchase and or provide goods to your company.
Below we will outline the type of information normally collected in each of these circumstances, the reasons for doing so, how we will use it and store it.
- When making a reservation with any of our properties it is necessary for us to gather the following information in order to identify you, to be able to contact you and be able to process your reservation. This information will usually include your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and your credit card number and expiration date. We may gather other information such as dietary requirements and special requests.
- From time to time, we may offer packages or other services that involve third parties. If you are partaking of such a package or service, your personal information will be shared with that third party to the extent necessary to provide that service and process the purchase or request.
- The Retreats Group may use the information you provide to send you offers and information about our services. If you do not wish to receive such offers and information you may unsubscribe or opt-out by sending an email to marketing@retreatsgroup.com, using the subject line “Unsubscribe”, so indicating your request with sufficient personal identifiers so we can appropriately act on your request. All our marketing communication of this type will also contain instructions for unsubscribing.
- For contractors on a monthly basis we will use your details to send invoices and other any other communications regarding your account. The data will be used for this purpose only.
When would we disclose any information?
- We disclose personal information only in these limited circumstances:
- We may disclose a guest’s personal information to an agent of the guest – for example, a travel agent who is booking a reservation on behalf of the guest
- Personal information will be shared with the Twr y Felin, Penrhiw Prioy or Roch Castle so that they may provide the services you have reserved.
- Personal information will be shared with a third party involved in supplying the guest with the services they have purchased to the extent necessary to effect the supply and the processing of the transaction.
- Personal information may be shared with an agent retained by The Retreats Group to evaluate a customer’s credit worthiness or in order to collect a customer’s account.
- Personal information may be shared with a public authority or an agent of public authority if in the judgment The Retreats Group it appears that there is an imminent danger to life or property which could be avoided or minimized by disclosure of the information, or which disclosure is compelled by legal authority.
Principles
- The Retreats group will only collect and use your personal information for the purpose that has been identified.
- We will ensure your information is protected when we deal with 3rd parties.
- We will honour your request to access your personal information in as timely fashion as possible.

The Retreats Group Ltd is fully committed to the principles of environmental sustainability through identifying and addressing the environmental aspects resulting from and associated with, its activities, products and services. In addition, the promotion of the conservation of natural resources is recognised as a priority consideration for the business and for the communities in which the business operates.
The purpose of this Policy is to ensure that all relevant activities, products and services of the organisation are identified and carried out in compliance with the relevant in-country environmental legislation and other requirements including but not limited to Prevention of Pollution.
Retreats group Ltd operates to support its Customers to reduce the environmental impact of their business activities and improve environmental efficiency through Objectives, Targets, Systems and Programmes. This includes but is not limited to:
- Increasing the deployment and delivery of sustainable services and solutions, which contribute to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
- Increasing energy and resource efficiency in the design of all our Properties.
- Enhancing the environmental efficiency of its business facilities to reduce the
- consumption of energy and other natural resources (e.g. water, waste).
- Comply with relevant environmental Standards and regulations as well as with

Authority & Accountability
An Environmental commitee acts on behalf of the Company director to set policy, regularly review and authorise plans at the management level, receive reports on rehearsal and implementation of plans as well as constitute the highest level of management for environmental activities.
The Environmental Committee shall identify owners of processes by which environmental risks, opportunities and aspects of The Retreats Group Ltd business activities are understood and managed in compliance with the international requirements and where relevant, in compliance with country/regional legislation.
All members of the Group are accountable for the implementation of this Policy within their area of Responsibility.
The Policy Owner shall:
- Ensure that all relevant Employees are aware of and, where appropriate, trained in the operation of this Policy and any changes to it;
- Ensure that any changes to the Policy or its associated Processes are duly authorised, for example by a suitable management meeting;
- Ensure that Processes are specified and maintained to enable Retreats Group Ltd to achieve its strategic objectives in respect of this Policy.
Employees:
- Each Employee in the organisations to which this Policy is applicable must comply with it and with its associated Processes.
- Any Employee found to be in breach of any Policy may be subject to disciplinary proceedings that may lead to dismissal.
Retreats Group Sustainability
Twr y Felin Hotel and sister venues Penrhiw Priory and Roch Castle are passionate about their environmental impact and strive to continually identify and improve their practices.
The Green Key
The group has developed and expanded its sustainability policy with a view to achieve the Green Key award for all three venues, which is a leading standard of excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. In 2019 the group achieved their goal after making positive changes to their working practices, to enhance the existing sustainability policy.
Grounds and Buildings
- Penrhiw Priory is the flagship venue of eight business in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’ Naturally Connected Programme, due to its 12 acres of biodiversity Wild Flower Meadow and Woodland Walkway.
- Electric or battery operated gardening machinery.
- We have planted 1000’s of trees and shrubs in the grounds at all three venues.
- We use Car y Mor (love of the Sea), seaweed fertilizer on our grounds.
- We have Water Refilling Station signage outside each of our venues.
- We use LED bulbs throughout the 4 venues where possible.
- Our eco-warrior team turn off plugs and lights whenever possible
- We have solar panels on our roof at Twr y Felin Hotel.
- Water saving taps, which limit the flow of water used.
- Electric car charging for guests at all of our venues.
- We often car share and encourage those that live close to walk or cycle.
- We offer bicycle parking and storage.
- We have the Visit Wales’ walking and cycling accreditations.
Receptions and Offices
- We are almost 100% paperless. In terms of our guests, all contact is done by phone or email and we have an app displaying our room directory, local information on where to go and what to see
- Guests can check in and out and pay their bills online and view the menus and information on the local area by using our app.
- All of our files are created digitally and we ask our suppliers to use a digital process for invoicing.
- We have a recycling system and recycle all possible items, including batteries, crisp packets.
- Paper pens are used instead of plastic ones which can be recyclable.
- Recyclable printer ink cartridges.
- Compostable Cellotape from plant based material
Housekeeping and Laundry
- We clean our own laundry locally to reduce carbon footprint and use non biological hypoallergenic powder to clean our linen.
- We use hypoallergenic cleaning products for the rooms, public area and kitchens in all 4 buildings that are environmentally friendly.
- We offer refillable toiletries in our bathrooms, including shampoo, conditioner, body/hand wash and body lotion.
- There is signage in the bathrooms encouraging guests to reuse towels.
- Recyclable bins are in all bedrooms for guests to use with biodegradable bin liners.
- Sustainably produced toilet paper and tissues for desk in rooms
Kitchens
- We source as much produce as possible from local suppliers, including seafood from Car y Mor, an environmental initiative in St Davids.
- Biodegradable cling film.
- Silicone covers for food containers
- We use aluminium foil made from recyclable materials.
Restaurant, Bars and Lounges:-
- We offer locally sourced bottled water and so we can recycle them and reduce our carbon footprint with local deliveries.
- All other drinks are offered in glass bottles.
- We use paper straws, take away cups and lunch boxes.
The Future
One part of the group’s weekly Heads of Department meeting is to brainstorm for ideas to develop our sustainability practices.
On a small scale we hope to continue identifying small things such as items we can reuse and recycle. On a larger scale we plan to switch our group vehicles from diesel to electric in the next 5 years and work towards becoming carbon neutral.
All employees are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect in our place of work. This means freedom from sexual harassment, feeling safe and supported, and having access to redress if such behaviour does arise.
Retreats Group Limited has overall responsibility for the operation of this policy but may delegate elements of implementation or decision making to the HR Manager. Our managers will maintain an open door policy. All of our staff have a responsibility to behave in line with the requirements of this policy.
Scope
We deplore all forms of sexual harassment and seek to ensure that the working environment is safe and supportive to all those who work for us. This includes employees, workers, agency workers, volunteers and contractors in all areas of our Company, including any overseas sites.
Definitions
Sexual harassment is unwanted conduct of a sexual nature which has the purpose or effect of violating a person’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that person. It also covers treating someone less favourably because they have submitted to or refused to submit to unwanted conduct of a sexual nature, or that is related to gender reassignment or sex.
Sexual harassment may be committed by a fellow worker, an agent of an organisation, or a third party. It does not need to occur in person. It can occur via digital means including social media sites or channels e.g. Whatsapp. Someone may be sexually harassed even if they were not the target of the behaviour. Examples of sexual harassment include, but are not limited to:
a) sexual comments or jokes, which may be referred to as ‘banter’
b) displaying sexually graphic pictures, posters or photos
c) suggestive looks, staring or leering
d) propositions and sexual advances
e) making promises in return for sexual favours
f) sexual gestures
g) intrusive questions about a person’s private or sex life or discussing their own sex life
h) sexual posts or contact in online communications including on social media
i) spreading sexual rumours about a person
j) sending sexually explicit emails, text messages or messages via other social media
k) unwelcome touching, hugging, massaging or kissing
l) unprofessional pet names
Victimisation is subjecting someone to detriment because they have done, are suspected of doing, or intend to do an act which is protected under discrimination and harassment laws. It is not necessary for the person to have done the protected act in order for detrimental treatment to be considered as victimisation.
The protected acts are:
a) making a claim or complaint under the Equality Act 2010 (for example, for discrimination or harassment)
b) helping someone else to make a claim by giving evidence or information in connection with proceedings under the Equality Act 2010
c) making an allegation that someone has breached the Equality Act 2010, or
d) doing anything else in connection with the Equality Act 2010
Examples of victimisation may include:
a) Failing to consider someone for promotion because they have previously made a sexual harassment complaint
b) Dismissing someone because they accompanied a colleague to a meeting about a sexual harassment complaint
c) Excluding someone from work meetings because they gave evidence as a witness for another employee as part of an employment tribunal claim about harassment.
Circumstances Which Are Covered
This policy covers behaviour which occurs in the following situations:
a) a work situation
b) a situation occurring outside of the normal workplace or normal working hours which is related to work, for example, a working lunch, a business trip or social functions
c) outside of a work situation but involving a colleague or other person connected to the Company, including on social media
d) against anyone outside of a work situation where the incident is relevant to your suitability to carry out the role.
Third-Party Sexual Harassment
Third-party sexual harassment occurs when one of our workforce is subjected to sexual harassment by someone who is not part of our workforce but who is encountered in connection with work. This includes our customers, suppliers, members of the public, and guests.
Third-party sexual harassment of our workforce is unlawful and will not be tolerated. The law requires employers to take steps to prevent sexual harassment by third parties.
In order to prevent third-party sexual harassment from occurring, we will:
a) inform third-parties i.e. suppliers of our zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy within our supplier documentation
If you have been subjected to third-party sexual harassment, you are encouraged to report this as soon as possible to the HR Manager.
Should a customer sexually harass a member of our workforce, we will (inform the guest, customer or contractor about their behaviour, potentially banning the harasser from the business. Any criminal acts will be reported to the police.
We will not tolerate sexual harassment by any member of our workforce against a third party. Instances of sexual harassment of this kind may lead to disciplinary action including termination of employment.
Training
We provide training to all our staff on sexual harassment to ensure there is a clear understanding of, amongst other things, what sexual harassment is and how it may occur, that it will not be tolerated, expected levels of behaviour, how they can report any incidents of having been sexually harassed or having witnessed it and that acts of harassment will be dealt with under the disciplinary procedure potentially resulting in dismissal.
We ensure that all levels of management are trained on implementing this policy including preventing and managing sexual harassment in the workplace, and the procedure to follow if an allegation is reported.
We will regularly review the effectiveness of our training.
We provide refresher training as appropriate.
