How did you get into boxing?
I started boxing at the age of 9 in the Yard ABC in Letterston. It was mainly to improve my fitness for rugby and football, but I fell in love with the sport as soon as I stepped into the ring.
After a year of training, I had my first fight and won unanimously. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had, and it led me to want more. The training went from once a week to three times a week, which meant I had to give up on my football. After a few years in Letterston, I moved clubs to Merlin’s Bridge ABC, where I am now. There are a lot more opportunities in Merlin’s Bridge, which has helped me develop my boxing skills. At the moment, I am a silver medalist in Britain at 75kg and a two-time Welsh champion.
What does it involve?
Boxing is a very disciplined sport. I train three times a week in Merlin’s Bridge alongside my own training in my home gym, which includes weights and boxing training. I also have to run three miles at least three times a week to ensure my fitness is at a good level. I have to watch my diet as I have to stay at a certain weight for competitions. I spend some of my weekends travelling around Wales for sparring sessions or Western Division boxing sessions. Now I’ve just started going up to Cardiff every month for a whole weekend to train with the Welsh development squad.
What are your goals?
My short-term goals are to have as many fights as possible, build my experience, and learn as much as I can. I want to win the Welsh championships again this year, with the big aim of gold at the British championships. This should all lead to me getting into the Welsh squad when I’m eighteen, travelling across the world to represent my country. My biggest goal would be to turn over to the professional level, where I fight at the highest level and make money from doing the thing I love.
How will this sponsorship support you?
This sponsorship will help me massively. It will allow me to get good quality, correct equipment I need for training, like gloves, boots and clothing. Also, it will help me with fighting equipment, allowing me to get a personalised fighting kit. The sponsorship will also allow me to travel up and down from Cardiff every month. Also, it will be able to get the correct food and supplements I need to develop, giving me a great advantage.
Timeline for upcoming events
I have a very busy few months on my hands with upcoming events. Firstly, I am fighting this weekend from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd in the Guerrilla International Boxing Cup. The week after I will be fighting in Swansea on the Bonymaen show against Romeo Macarelli. Then I move onto the western division box cup which will help me lead up to the Welsh championships that start at the end of March. Hopefully, I will get selected again to represent Wales in the British Championships in May.
